Posh Coffee Morning - 22nd May 2021

Many thanks to all who attended the “Posh Coffee Morning” at the Green Cafe on Saturday. It was great to hear the sound of chatter and laughter once again in the HG Community Hall. Thanks go to all who helped make this event happen and in particular to John Gallanders of AVOW in Wrexham, who helped Barbara interpret the Covid compliant rules. Whilst no charges were made, £44.30 was raised in donations for our yet to be identified “charity of the year”. Well done and thanks. Hopefully more Coffee Mornings will follow, but be warned – you MUST book in advance. This was sold out well in advance of the day!

4 June 2021 Local walk: Mere, Woodland and Meadows

Finally, residents and friends of Horseman’s Green were able to meet up for an organised local walk with 12 hardy souls setting off eagerly from the Community Hall, meeting up with a further three at Hanmer.  The group paused briefly for one of many photo opportunities, before walking alongside the Mere, through woodlands, meadows and along lanes.  As expected on our walks, the sun shone, the wildflowers looked stunning and the Mere sparkled as we chatted and ambled our way round a very pleasant route.  On our return we stopped at Hanmer for a well-earned tea break and to chat and reflect on our 7 mile excursion.  This was our first walk of 2021 (and 2020), but with the Horseman’s Green Community Group organising further activities (restrictions permitting) for the coming months we look forward to being out and about again soon.

July 23rd 2021- Whixall Moss Walk

Once again our small community group joined Barry Probin at Morris’s Bridge for a guided walk on Whixall Moss. Fortunately temperatures were slightly lower than the previous few days which, combined with a gentle breeze, made for tolerable conditions.

As is always the case when Barry is around numerous butterflies, damsel flies and dragon flies were spotted along with several rarer species of birds, such as a Hobby. Barry’s enthusiasm and depth of knowledge of the area always shines through on these afternoons. For this visit we also had the company of Steve Dobbin from Natural England who briefed us on the recent work and developments in the regeneration of the Moss.

The walk included a visit to the newly erected Mammoth Viewing Tower, from which there is a spectacular view of the Moss area.  Certainly worth a visit!

As is becoming a tradition of these walks, the group ended the afternoon chatting with Barry over homemade cakes and a coffee at the Marina Cafe.

I am delighted to say Barry has agreed to give a talk on the ‘Butterflies and Insects of The Moss’ in the Community Hall later in the year. Watch for information on this in the next News Letter. Another visit to the Moss with Barry is planned for next year.

Once again the community hall and Green cafe was buzzing.

Thank you to everyone who attended and a particular thank you to those who kindly donated the delicious, homemade cakes which provided the perfect accompaniment to the tea and coffee.

Another successful event which raised £68 for the community hall fund.

Poppy Coffee Morning - 6th November 2021

Many thanks to our generous community for supporting this year's Poppy Appeal. The morning  was well attended and the hall was filled with chit chat and laughter once again. A big thank you to all who helped make it possible and to Jac and Ella  Wood who were great little ambassadors for  the RBL. As soon as the collection box is opened by RBL and all monies counted we will post the total donated. Once again, thank you all so much.

Quiz Night - 19th November 2021

The little grey cells of the residents and friends of Horseman’s Green were once again tested at a quiz held at the Community Hall on Friday 19 November.  Quiz master Peter Lawrence challenged our memories and knowledge over 7 rounds of 12 questions. Once again we were surprised by what we do know and amazed at how many times we had the right answer to the wrong question.  The sold out event welcomed 55 people over a socially distanced 13 tables and raised over £170.  We thank Peter once again for an excellent quiz and special thanks to volunteer Oliver Edwards for his time with the raffle, making sure we all knew were we were going and generally helping out during the evening.
Looking forward to seeing everyone at the Christmas Tree Lights ‘Big Switch On’ 4th December at 3pm.  Don’t forget that weatherproof Christmas tree decoration.

Land's End to John O'Groats Cycle Ride - Mark Dunford

A huge thank you to Mark Dunford, a local resident, for taking time to present a slideshow of his recent 970mile cycle ride from Land’s End to John O’Groats in aid of Macmillan . Mark and his son Matt completed the cycle  in 9 days. What an amazing experience. The pair seem to have smiled for the whole gruelling distance and even more gruelling  climbs.  After his talk we were treated to cheese and wine, and then the opportunity to ask Mark questions about food, drink, sleeping arrangements and blisters.  Some things we didn’t need to know!  £280 was raised on the night which Mark is donating to Macmillan.  Excellent evening and thank you to Mark, his support team on the night of Christine and Colum (aka technical support), to Everyone who helped on the night and our thanks once again to Belton Cheese.

Christmas Lights Switch On - Saturday 4th December 2021

So Christmas festivities have begun in Horseman’s Green with a special festive switch on of the Community Hall Christmas tree lights.

This was no ordinary occasion as long standing residents of Horseman’s Green, Eddie and Margaret Butler, were invited to switch on the lights.

They were supported by 71 local residents and friends who wrapped up and turned out to take part in the festive cheer. How amazing to see everyone and Oh those Christmas hats and jumpers.

We must thank Hilary and Karen for their amazing work in the kitchen and Barbara and Lin who served drinks, mince pies and Andrea on ‘the gate’  booking everyone in.

Responsibility of choosing and delivering the tree was down to Colin and Jim and haven’t they done a good job.

Thanks to Colin, Jim, Paul, Joe and Chris for making sure we were safe on the day and for work behind the scenes.

And of course, Jackie who expertly decorated the Hall for Christmas. Absolutely Baublicious! Also a big thank you to all of you who brought along a decoration for the tree, home made or bought, the tree is looking really good. Still time to drop your decoration off too.

Finally, the Grand Christmas Draw raised £750 which reflects the quality of the prizes on offer with so many donated by our generous local businesses. Congratulations to the winners.

Merry Christmas everyone and Best wishes for 2022 from us all at Horseman’s Green.
