Christmas Lights Switch On

Let the festivities begin! A bedazzling Community Hall proudly decked out with its Christmas decorations welcomed the residents who braved the cold, damp and fog for the switch on of the Christmas tree lights. A complimentary glass of Prosecco along with a hot drink was available on arrival

The celebrity for the evening, selected by the management group, was Sylvia Whitfield. Sylvia kindly switched the lights on for the community. The first verse of ‘We wish you a Merry Christmas’ was followed by a very large cheer of approval from the gathered crowd.

The Pop up Pub continued into the evening with the bar ably manned by Gareth and Colin. Drinks were all competitively priced.  There was an extensive buffet of light bites and nibbles which was tucked into throughout the evening.

It was a great evening with a great atmosphere. A super community event!         Thanks go to all who helped prepare the tree and hall before hand and on the night itself. Particular thanks go to Jackie for her work on the decorations; organising the bar; and preparing the buffet.

Missed this? Join in the Community Carols on Tuesday December 20th at 7.00pm when Mulled wine and Mince Pies will be served. Donations of mince pies to Barbara or leave at the Hall beforehand please.

Poppy Coffee Morning - Saturday 5th November 2022
Queen's Platinum Jubilee Picnic - 5th June 2022

They braved the cold, the wind and wet. They entered struggling with their over sized picnic boxes to attend the Horseman’s Green Jubilee picnic celebration. What a wonderful sight of red, white and blue greeted them! The hall and tables were decorated in patriotic colours and Union Jacks. It was great to see everyone keeping to this colour theme. After tucking into the delights of their picnics guests were kept occupied and enthralled in a Fun Quiz about the Royal Family. Some of the little ones ventured outside into the wet bunting decked garden to enjoy a few garden games. A shame we weren’t able to put this decorated space to more use.

The fact that June 1st to the 7th is Volunteers Week was also marked with a HUGE thanks to ALL the volunteers – far too numerous to mention – who help to keep the hall with all its activities functioning for the benefit of the HG community and the community at large.

Despite the weather the Jubilee Celebration was a happy afternoon with friends and families and hopefully created lasting memories. Thanks so very much to you all for coming along and enjoying yourselves Thanks also to all those who helped: plan the event; prepare the hall; erect the marquee and gazebo and string the bunting and clean the hall. It was well worth ALL your efforts!

Just one little note – for the couple from Whixall. Where did you go please? We did miss you. Please do come back to another event. You will be more than welcomed.

Between Mouthfuls

The show must go on; and it did finally after two aborted attempts during the Covid pandemic, so third time lucky.

Hilary Andrews who had the idea for the evening breathed an audible sigh of relief as the lights were dimmed and a hush spread across the  audience in anticipation of things to come.

On 20 May, Between Mouthfuls, a one act play by Alan Ayckbourn, was performed by five enthusiastic residents, Brian Gilbert, Peter and Nicky Bowen, Gareth Edwards and Julie Jones with “technical support and stage management “ provided by Keith Jones and Colin Porter.

The Hall provided the perfect stage for a play set in a restaurant as the audience were treated to a superb two course meal proved by Jackie Edwards, supported on the night by Teresa Watson and Karen Dimelow with Lin and Jo Smith on the bar.

The audience found plenty to laugh at from the outset, much to the relief of the cast, the play being a comedy!  Thanks also to Andrea Porter on box office duties and Ian West for support on the night.

Finally, a huge “Thank you”to everyone who attended to make this a really special night. Who knew there was such local thespian talent in the area.

Watch this space for the next stage spectacular.

Tropic Pamper Event - 18th May 2022

On 18 May, the Horseman’s Green Ladies Evening welcomed 19 ladies to a Tropic Pamper Event hosted by Laura Scott.  Laura was entertaining, knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the vegan-friendly, cruelty free brand of products.  The scent in the Hall was amazing as various creams, lotions and balms were tried and tested.  A glass of fizz and nibbles ended a perfectly enjoyable and relaxing evening.

What a great event! Thank you Laura for your hospitality.  (Facebook Live, Laugh and Love Tropic with Laura).

Next Ladies Evening Wednesday 15 June, watch this space for details.

Gardening Club - 2nd April 2022

There was a buzz about the Community Hall this morning (2 April) as we were busy as bees  getting ready for a talk  “Gardening for Insects” by Dr Lucy Witter, Pollinator Ecologist from the Cheshire Wildlife Trust. Lucy spoke with passion, fun and enthusiasm about how we can all make a difference by gardening with insects in mind.  Lucy has obviously performed the bee dance a fair few times, explaining how bees communicate with each other.  Twenty two residents and friends will now be planting bee friendly flowers being especially aware about early season pollinators, creating bee hotels and generally ensuring we are more responsible about our garden practises.  Not being too tidy around all parts of our gardens helps which was good news to many of us. Thank you to Teresa for ensuring we all had teas and coffees and to Yvonne, Jackie and Angela for the cakes and to Andrea for welcoming everyone to the Hall. The windows were open ensuring plenty of fresh air in these Covid times and at the end of the talk Lucy rescued a bee found in the kitchen.  Bee-autiful!

All proceeds from this morning (£75.00) will go to the Disasters Emergency Committee Ukraine Fund. A donation will also be made to the Cheshire Wildlife Trust. Thank you Lucy.

Country Walk - Wednesday 23rd February 2022

Starting out from the Carden Arms in Tilston, 17 people and 3 dogs were treated to a delightful four and a half mile walk over gentle rolling countryside, wandering down lanes and over fields and babbling brooks.  As expected on a Horseman’s Green walk, the weather was kind to us and we avoided the winds and rain of the previous few days. At the end of our walk we were treated to a hearty and tasty meal and excellent service at the Carden Arms.  I think a fair few spent longer over their lunch than they did walking which just shows what a friendly, sociable group of people we are.  Make sure you join us for the next walk. See you soon.

'A Celebration of Insects of the Mosses' - An Illustrated talk by Barry Probin

The wonders of the wonderful world of the insects of Whixall Moss were shared with 20 residents and friends of Horseman’s Green by Barry Probin, amateur naturalist and photographer.

We were treated to a presentation introducing us to a variety of insects in every colour of the rainbow and with the eating, mating and lifestyle behaviour to beat any Soap Opera.

Barry’s knowledge of the Moss, it’s history and wildlife is immense and his photography brings it alive allowing us to see the details of dragonflies, damselflies, beatles, hoverflies, butterflies, moths the list goes on.  And of course, Barry allowed the famous and infamous Raft spider to make a guest appearance (on screen only of course).

We are looking forward to themed walks at Whixall Moss with Barry later in the year. Not to be missed.

Thank you Barry.

Breakfast Club - 29th Jan 2022

As the dawn broke over Horseman’s Green, Susan and David Spence were busy warming pans and cracking open fresh eggs in readiness for the first Horseman’s Green Community Hall Breakfast Club.  Over two sittings, 26 hungry souls were treated to orange juice, tea and coffee, full English breakfast, toast, croissants and pastries.  We wandered in with a whole nights hunger to sate and wandered out ready to  face the day, (hoping we had nothing planned for lunch!).  Thank you to David and Susan, and the support crew of Christine, Barbara and Andrea. Good food and good company resulted in yet another successful event but if you missed this one, don’t panic as our doors will be open for our second breakfast club in March.
